Midcoats — The Strength and Style of Your Epoxy Floor

Mid coats are the layer that bring both strength and design to an epoxy system. Once the primer has bonded to the concrete, the midcoat builds thickness, durability, and the overall look of the floor. Whether you’re going for a smooth professional finish, artistic metallic swirls, or even glow-in-the-dark effects, this is the step where the transformation happens.

Midcoat Epoxy Systems

Standard Midcoat Epoxies

Standard midcoat epoxies are the backbone of the system. They provide the strength and body needed to withstand traffic, impact, and everyday use. By building up thickness, they give the floor its long-term durability while preparing the surface for decorative finishes or topcoats.

Fast-Set Midcoats

When time is limited, fast-set midcoats allow projects to move faster without sacrificing performance. These cure more quickly than standard midcoats, reducing downtime while still adding strength and structure to the floor. They are ideal for garages, warehouses, and businesses that need to get back in operation quickly.

Metallic Midcoats

Metallic midcoats are where artistry comes alive. By blending pigments into the epoxy, we create fluid, marble-like designs that are unique to each floor. No two metallic floors are ever the same. Perfect for showrooms, homes, and commercial spaces that want a luxury look with long-lasting durability.

Glow-in-the-Dark Midcoats

Glow-in-the-dark midcoats bring creativity and safety together. They are often used for accent designs, pathways, or areas where visibility matters when the lights are low. Charged by natural or artificial light, they provide a unique look and can even enhance safety in specific environments.

How Long Midcoats Take to Cure

Every midcoat type has different curing properties, but here are the general ranges:

  • Pot Life: 20–45 minutes (usable after mixing).

  • Recoat Window: 8–24 hours before applying a topcoat.

  • Light Foot Traffic: 12–24 hours.

  • Drive-On / Heavy Use: 48–72 hours.

  • Full Chemical Cure: 4–7 days.

Why Timing Matters:

Midcoats are where most of the strength is built, so letting them cure properly is critical. Rushing this stage can cause weak spots or ruin the finish, especially with metallic designs where the pattern needs time to settle.

Sanding for a Flawless Finish

Surface Preparations

Sometimes a midcoat may need to be sanded before the next layer is applied. This is completely normal in the epoxy process. If small bubbles, dust particles, or surface inconsistencies appear, sanding smooths them out and ensures the next coat bonds perfectly.

By lightly sanding and then cleaning the floor, we create a flawless surface for the topcoat. This extra step is one of the reasons professional epoxy floors from PNA Coatings look seamless and last longer than DIY or shortcut jobs.
